The Australian Government will currently grant working holiday visas to applicants who are nationals of:-
Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Sweeden, The Netherlands, The Republic of Ireland, The United Kingdom of Great Brittain and Northern Ireland, Estonia and Germany. Such persons can apply for a visa in any foreign country. Further, nationals of Japan, Malta, Cyprus, Korea and Taiwan (provided passport is not an official or diplomatic passport) may apply within their home countries. Passport holders from the Hong Kong Special Administration region, PRC and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, whose nationality is British National (Overseas) may apply in Hong Kong.
Applicants must be aged between 18 and 30.
Applicants must also show that they have no dependent children.
The Department must be satisfied that the applicant has sufficient money for their return fare and for the purposes of support whilst undertaking a working holiday.
The Department must also be satisfied that the applicant has reasonable prospects of obtaining employment in Australia and will not undertake study or training in Australia for more than four (4) months.
A working holiday visa holder must not be employed by any one employer for more than six (6) months without prior written permission.
Previously, only one working holiday was allowed and no extension was possible. In changes from 1 July 2006, applicants who demonstrate that they have carried out seasonal work in regional Australia for a total period of at least three (3) months whilst holding a working holiday visa, may apply for an extension to up to 24 months from date of first entry. There is a limitation however to the extent that only applicants who have entered Australia as the holder of one working holiday visa only, may apply for such extension.
